The 42nd edition of the Rossini Opera Festival will be held in Pesaro from the 9th to the 22nd August 2021.  The third opera on the bill is Elisabetta regina d’Inghilterra, to be produced at the Vitrifrigo Arena on the 11th August at 8.00 p.m., conducted by Evelino Pidò with the Orchestra Sinfonica of the RAI and the Chorus of the Teatro ventidio Basso, staged by Davide Livermore, with scenery by Giò Forma, costumes by Gianluca Falaschi, lighting by Nicolas Bovey and videodesign by D-Wok.  The cast features Karine Deshayes, Sergey Romanovsky, Salome Jicia, Marta Pluda, Barry Banks and Valentino Buzza.  The opera will be repeated on the 14th, 17th and 21st August.  The opera is a co-production with the Fondazione Teatro Massimo, Palermo: it will be broadcast live on Rai Radio Tre and it will be shown on the Rai5 television channel on Thursday 30th September at 9.15 p.m.

Elisabetta  regina d’Inghilterra, a dramma per musica (serious opera) in two acts to a libretto by Giovanni Schmidt, was first produced at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples, on the 4th October 1815.  The singers in the first performance were Isabella Colbran (Elisabetta), Andrea Nozzari (Leicester), Girolama Dardanelli (Matilde), Maria Manzi (Enrico), Emanuele Garcia (Norfolc), Gaetano Chizzola (Guglielmo).

The autograph score is to be found at the Fondazione Rossini in Pesaro.  The story is taken from a play of the same name by Carlo Federici, which, in turn, was drawn from the novel The Recess by Sophia Lee.

Rossini conducted this opera in May 1822 at the Kärnthnertortheater, Vienna.

This opera, with which Rossini would make his bow in Naples in 1815, would be repeatedly revived at the San Carlo theatre, the place where it was first performed, and within just a few years it reached many of the most important Italian and foreign opera houses (Milan, Venice, Dresden, London, Paris, to name but a few): until 1834 at least one production a year can be securely traced, and not only in Europe.
