Spyres inaugurates the Concerti di Belcanto

The first of the series of Bel Canto concerts, eagerly awaited by opera lovers, will be held at the Auditorium Pedrotti on Thursday 15th August at 5.00 p.m. The concert will be given by Michael Spyres, who was greatly appreciated at the Rof  last year when he sang in Ciro in Babilonia, accompanied at the piano by Sabrina Avantario.

The programme includes pieces by Alessandro Stradella (Se I miei sospiri), Alessandro Scarlatti (Già il sole del Gange), Antonio Maria Mazzoni (the Aria ‘Tu m’involasti un regno’ from Antigono), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Ferrando’s Aria ‘Un’aura amorosa’ from Così fan tutte), Gioachino Rossini (Dorvil’s Aria ‘Vedrò qual sommo incanto’ from La scala di seta and the Cavatina ‘Ah! Sì per voi già sento’ from Otello), François-Adrien Boïeldieu (Georges’ Aria ‘Viens, gentille dame’ from La dame blanche), Giuseppe Verdi (the Duke’s Scene and Aria ‘Ella mi fu rapita!....Parmi veder le lagrime’ from Rigoletto).

The tenor Michael Spyres was born in Mansfield (Missouri), and made his début in Naples in 2006 as Jaquino (Fidelio). He then sang Alberto (La gazzetta) and Otello in Bad Wildbad, Tamino (The magic flute) at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, La Favorite in London,  Belfiore (Il viaggio a Reims) at La Scala, and Raoul (Les Huguenots) in New York. More recently he has sung Giannetto (La gazza ladra) in Dresden, Arnold (Guillaume Tell) at the Caramoor Festival, Rodrigo (La donna del lago) at La Scala, Masaniello (La muette de Portici) in Paris, Orombello (Beatrice di Tenda) at Carnegie Hall, Hoffmann (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) in Barcelona,  Masaniello in Bari and Rodrigo again (La donna del lago) at Covent Garden.

Future projects will take him to the Lyric Opera of Chicago, to Covent Garden, to Amsterdam, Paris (Théâtre des Champs Elysées), Munich and Aix-en-Provence. He has recorded La gazzettaOtello and Le siege de Corinthe and an aria collection, A Fool for Love.

Besides the recital, this year he will also sing the rôle of Rodrigo in La donna del lago, which will close the Festival on the 23rd August.
