Rossini Opera Gala in Nicosia

13 June 2018
The 150 Rossini Opera Gala event organized by the "Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics" (CING) was held in the gardens of the presidential palace, to raise funds for the benefit of Telethon, with the support of the Embassy of Italy in Nicosia. The event also allowed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Gioachino Rossini's death in a highly visible context in Cyprus, while affirming the intensity of cultural collaboration between Italy and Cyprus.

Over 700 people attended the event: in addition to the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, and the "First Lady", Mrs. Andri Anastasiades, were the Minister of Health, Constantinos Ioannou, some presidential Councilors, members of the political, economic world and cultural, members of the diplomatic corps and a large audience.

In his opening speech, President Anastasiades had words of appreciation for Italy, for having benefited from the research activity of CING and for bringing the excellence of Italian lyric tradition to Cyprus. Particularly warm thanks also to the CING Director, Leonidas Philactou.

The music program was curated with great care by the Rossini Opera Festival together with the dynamic conductor of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, Jens George Bachmann. The musical genius of Rossini has been enhanced.

Particularly appreciated by the public are the young opera singers of the Rossini Academy "Alberto Zedda" of the Rossini Opera Festival - the soprano Francesca Tassinari, the mezzosoprano Martiniana Antonie, the tenor Pietro Adaini and the baritone Daniele Antonangeli - as well as the three Cypriot artists (two of the which specially came from London), who completed the cast: the baritones Yiorgos Ioannou and Stavros Mantis and the soprano Zara Barkhoudarian.

The initiative was able to involve a large and qualified audience in the name of the charity and promotion of the Italian lyric tradition in the Rossini year, encouraging collaboration between cultural institutions (CYSO and ROF) and between artists of the two countries, as well as between the Embassy and one of the main centers of scientific research and medical care in Cyprus.
