Prina inaugurates the Belcanto Concerts

The Concerts of Belcanto, traditional fixtures always eagerly awaited by Festival audiences, open on Monday 13th August at 5.00 p.m. with a recital by Sonia Prina.

A contralto, born in Magenta, Sonia Prina took her diploma in trumpet and singing at the Conservatorio Verdi in Milan. In 1994 she won admission to the Accademia of La Scala, and from 1997 began to be engaged for opera Seasons, with particular reference to the baroque repertoire. Among her most outstanding engagements of recent years we might quote Clarice in La pietra del paragone at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris; Orlando in Handel’s Orlando at the Sydney Opera House and at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées; the title rôle in Handel’s Rinaldo at La Scala, Milan; the title rôle in Tamerlano at the Munich State Opera; Ascanio in Ascanio in Alba at the Salzburg Festival. A Handel specialist, she has also sung such rôles as Isabella in L’Italiana in Algeri at the Teatro Regio, Turin, Smeton in Anna Bolena at the Liceu, Barcelona with Edita Gruberova and Elina Garança, as well as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, which she sang for the first time at La Scala with Juan Diego Flórez when she was only 23 years old. She is returning to the ROF after having sung here in 2000, when she took the part of Tisbe in La Cenerentola.

The programme of the concert, in which Prina will be accompanied by the Ensemble Claudiana (Luca Pianca – lute and conductor; Stefano Demicheli - cembalo; Vittorio Ghielmi – viola da gamba) will include works by Antonio Vivaldi (Care selve, amici prati; Concerto sesto delle Stravaganze; Qual per ignota calle; Perfidissimo cor!; Pianti, sospiri) and Antoine Fourqueray (Allemande; La Girouette; La Leclair).
