New President for the Friends of the ROF

American Friends of the ROF is pleased to announce the newly appointed President, Alexander D. Crary.

Alexander “Sandy” Crary spent much of his professional career working with the cultural programs of the United States government. Beginning in 1975 with a position in the Office of the Secretary at the Smithsonian Institution, Mr. Crary moved on to a senior staff position in the United States Senate. For 16 years he advised Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island on a wide variety of cultural policy matters. His portfolio included the oversight of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. (Senator Pell was the sponsor of legislation that established each of these three federal agencies.) In the Senate he also worked closely with the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Following the election of President Clinton in 1992, Mr. Crary was invited to serve on the incoming administration’s Transition Task Force on the Arts and Humanities. He later accepted an appointment at the National Endowment for the Arts as the agency’s Chief of Staff under Chairman Jane Alexander.

Between 2002 and 2007, Mr. Crary served as Executive Director of the Civitella Ranieri Foundation. The Foundation is an American non-profit corporation that operates an international residency program for artists, writers and composers in the Umbria region of Italy. He is also a Vice-President of the board of Washington Concert Opera.

We also welcome two new members on the board, Beverly Kleiman of Boston and Karl Varnik of New York. With these addtions, the full board of Friends of The ROF is now comprised as follows: Alexander D. Crary, President; Paola Pierangeli Tittarelli, Vice President; Welleda Donovan, Vice President; Kay Bearman, Treasurer; James David Draper, Secretary; Gary Gordon; Beverly Kleiman; Karl Varnik.

We wish to give our profound thanks to Gary Gordon for the enormous efforts he has made as President of Friend of the ROF from its very start in the year 2008.
