Gioachino Rossini’s birthplace
Rossini was born in Pesaro in a house in Via del Duomo, today re-named Via Rossini. The building is an example of lesser urban construction, the first two floors of which date back to the XVth century. The Rossini family lived there from 1790 to 1796. The museum in Rossini’s birthplace houses a collection of prints, a portrait gallery (amongst these, Doré’s drawing of the dying Rossini), a collection of caricatures, the spinet on which the maestro studied as a boy, and some autographs.
Conservatorio di Musica Rossini
The state music school, the Conservatorio di Musica “G. Rossini”, opened simply as a “Liceo Musicale”, is today recognized as having University status as an “Istituto superiore di Studi musicali”. It can boast of a prestigious historical curriculum and is among the oldest conservatories in Italy (courses were begun in 1882): among its directors we should quote Pietro Mascagni, Amilcare Zanella, Riccardo Zandonai and Franco Alfano. It is housed in the Palazzo Olivieri.
